Both Paul Laurence Dunbar and Charlotte Perkins Gilman grew up during the Romantic Period, a time period in which helped derive their voices based on their own individual life experiences, leading to their distinctive works of literature. Both Dunbar and Gilman depict the struggles of repressed social groups due to societal inequities in the early nineteenth century through their works of literature. Around the time when both writers were published, during the Realistic Period (1860-1900), American life began to change. The tone of gloom and hope yet decline and progress were reflective of the â€Å"Gilded Age,† the age of â€Å"extremes† (technological revolution).
